A Primer On Oil Painting
Apr 30, 2010 Uncategorized
What is Oil Paint?
Oil paint is color particles, also called pigment that is combined with oil. Although the old masters, who made their own paints, mixed pigment with a variety of oils and other substances, today, linseed oil is the common agent used by manufacturers to make paint.
In the hands of a master, the oil paints can be layered and blended on canvas to create rich, beautiful images. But don’t fret if you were not born the next DaVinci, you can always learn how to paint with oils.
Oil paints take longer to dry than water-based paints. The chemical process is different from water-based paints, because oil doesn’t evaporate like water into the atmosphere. If this is your first experience with oil paint, be aware that depending upon the humidity levels at your location, oil paints can take weeks to dry. This is benefit if you want to blend colors but are working on a project that cannot be complete in one sitting. It can also be an issue if you are trying to rush your work to a client before it’s dry. Don’t do it. You can ruin your painting.
A Little History
The painters of old, such as Van Eyck, DaVinci, Titian, and Tintoretto, all made their own oil paints by mixing pigment found in plants, flowers, and other ingredients and then boiling the oil, or baking it in the sun. Some also mixed wax or other ingredients into the concoction. It wasn’t until the mid 1800’s that paint production was industrialized and produced in tubes with caps, similar to the way we buy them today.
The advent of tube-packaged paints gave artists more flexibility and time. Instead of devoting their attention to making paint, they could now concentrate on the work itself. It also changed the way artists paint. Packaged paints gave the artist more freedom, flexibility, and a wide variety of consistent colors. This freedom and flexibility in their life translated into their work and is said to have lead to the impressionist movement.
Using Oil Paint
Select a well-ventilated spot. Oil paint smells like linseed oil and the scent can linger. Also, odorless turpentine which is used as a paint thinner and to clean brushes, is not completely odorless as the name implies.
Of all the tables, canvases and palettes available at your local craft store, the most important instrument to an artist is light. Make sure that you are working in a well-lit space. Natural light is always preferred.
Oil paint is typically painted on canvas. In the same way you paint a coat of primer on your walls before you paint a room, it’s important to prime the canvas so the fibers don’t absorb the oil. This primer used by artists is called gesso. Gesso is a water-based paint. Apply at least two thin coats to your canvas, allowing each coat to thoroughly dry.
Once the gesso has dried, it is time to jump in and begin your painting. You can apply the paint using a brush, a palette knife, your fingers, or whatever works for your. You can draw the image on the canvas first or just apply the paint and see where it leads. However you do it, have fun.
New and seasoned artists can greatly benefit from painting workshops. Workshops give you real world painting instruction in specific techniques. Receive one-on-one oil painting instruction from an experienced artist.

Due to the higher risk associated with a start up business or expanding a business the interest rates and associated fees on these type of loans tends to be higher than more traditional business financing. The reason for this is that there tend to be more foreclosures on this type of business funding and the lenders have to protect their losses.
Another factor in these type of loans is the reality that the loan merchant will usually demand some sort of collateral for the loan. The collateral can take the form of business property owned by the business. Often the proprietor of a business will put up property, even their own home, to secure a loan. The thing to remember is the more money or collateral that is put down on the loan the lower the interest rate. This is because there is less risk to the lender.
Needless to say the issue of where to go for one of these loans can be puzzling in itself for a lot of people. One of the first places to pay a visit to or call is a financial institution that one already has an continuing banking partnership. This is a good place to start mainly because most likely one has had some contact with employees of such an institution.

Since there are plenty of lenders online an individual needs to measure the loan factors that would be demanded. As with any industry there will be a lot of distinctions among the companies that give out these high risk business loans.

I love to write about a variety of interesting topics. I do not have a favorite topic in mind, but I really enjoy writing about almost anything right now. At this time I am starting an online business. I have been known to write about credit cards, insurance, Spanish, English, Chinese, Japanese, French, Italian, German and other languages. I speak several different languages and currently I’m going to school to acquire a bachelors degree.
When I’m done with school, I will continue to do SEO work and write articles. I enjoy writing articles because I’m able to learn more about the topics that I’m not very familiar with. Of course, I have to learn about the topics first, and I do much of my research on the internet. I am able to write about what I have learned on that topic. For example, if I am learning, or if I am going to write an article about a topic, I first go online and I research that topic. Sometimes it only takes me a few minutes when I am somewhat familiar with the topic already. It depends on how familiar I am with the topic. Sometimes it might take me an hour or more to learn about the topic. Either way, I am continuing my education.
I look at all kinds of sites. I like to look at sites like yahoo answers, Google News, Yahoo news, CNN, Fox news, press releases and other reference materials. After I have researched the topic well, I can write something from off the top of my head. To give you an example you can check out some of my work in the highlighted links.
I then set the article aside and maybe wait a few hours, sometimes a day and then I’ll get back to it later with fresh eyes and a good night’s sleep. Next I’ll see the article, and again review it for any errors or any changes needed. I like to see if it might sound better if it were put in other words, sometimes more precise and condensed. Then I’m ready to publish what I wrote, so I find the place where I want to publish it, and I submit the article. The article is then reviewed. It is usually accepted and I can go on in the next topic of choice. After the readers have the information, they can go on to look up the information that I have given to them.

Converting waste into power
Apr 27, 2010 Uncategorized
Right through history, recycling has been around in some guise or another. Even as long ago as 400 BC evidences of earlier recycling are recognized to have occurred. Archaeological studies show that historical waste dumps contained fewer of what is known nowadays as household waste, including pots, utensils and ash, which shows that men and women were, even back then, keen to reuse materials during a period when natural resources weren’t so freely available. Little did they know that the things they were starting would play such a huge role in shaping the world for future generations
Indeed it may be argued that the old ‘rag-and-bone’ man was just an early recycler collecting unwanted goods on his horse and cart, before reusing or transforming the collected items into something new.
During periods such as the World War Years, recycling and re-use were essential as natural resources became much more difficult to get. Along with food being rationed, certain materials like metal and fibre were largely allowed just for use by the government in support of military operations, to meet manufacturing requirements often in the production of weaponry.
Because of rising power costs, the demand to recycle aluminium increased in the seventies.. As a material aluminium utilises a lesser amount of energy in the production process than various other materials. Plus it was much sought after as a result of its non rusting qualities. The demand for aluminium saw the emergence of scrap metal dealers who were ready to pay cash in return for good quality metal. In addition, in the seventies in areas of the United states, the first vans were seen to be collecting waste with a separate trailer for the recovery of recyclable resources being towed behind the vehicle. This was mainly for big bulky things including bedsteads and old carpets.
Into the late 1980’s, early 1990’s and as the awareness of managing the global environmental state increased amongst world-wide governing bodies, the focus upon recycling really began to get impetus. In the United Kingdom, the government imposed recycling targets upon Local Authorities along with the introduction of the fresh new legislation upon the waste market, recycling schemes really began to take off. The once widely recognised waste disposal corporations, began to call themselves waste management firms and demonstrated by the offer of waste collection and recyclable materials collection that waste had to be handled more efficiently. Local skip companies needed to become better at what they did.
These days, many hundreds of materials and products can be recycled, ranging from paper, card, glass and plastics, to mobile phones, electrical items, printer cartridges, textiles, clothing and concrete. The demand for different types of collection receptacles has increased dramatically.
What is Recycling?
The term recycling describes the process of converting used materials into new or nearly new products and avoid the need for potentially useful materials or products to be discarded. Essentially it is diverting waste away from landfill.
Recycling takes on a key role in a world where climate change is high on the green agenda. It removes the requirement to avoidably send waste materials and products to landfill or other waste disposal options. Consequently this lessens the demand or the reliance upon the consumption of fresh or new natural resources, reduces energy use and air and water pollution, all of which contribute to lower greenhouse gas emissions. Significant contributions to improving the natural environment.
Recycling is probably most evident through the recycling assistance now provided by local authorities for household refuse and recycling collections and also modern waste management firms who generally provide a full range of waste and recycling collection solutions.
Being able to collect waste material and convert it back to a very functional material is of substantial benefit to our communities especially in the long run. For recycling providers click here for all your recycling requirements.
Within the waste market, the common marketing activity surrounds the waste material hierarchy – ‘reduce, reuse, recycle and recover’. This 4 R slogan is a basic message designed for a far reaching audience. Look at ways to lessen your waste material. Can the waste materials products or materials be reused? Could the waste product or material be recycled or retrieved?
The waste materials hierarchy is usually a strategy that various waste material management firms and local authorities think about when developing new waste management schemes. The plan is meant to concentrate the thought process around avoiding waste being generated to begin with. Take into account the options for reuse and recycling but ultimately minimise the amount of waste produced at the end of the cycle.
And so the emphasis is very much on the overall production process. The waste hierarchy expands much wider than to waste materials management businesses and local authorities. Working groups have been set up to bring many sectors together to look at the entire waste cycle. For instance, the producer of a product needs to think about how the product is to be manufactured. Could components be used that can later be recycled or reused? Could the amount of packaging which often surrounds the item be cut down? When the item reaches the retailer, is it required for the product to be placed within an outer package? Once the retailer sells the item, what will the buyer do with the excess components of the purchase, i.e. the packaging? How will the packaging be stored and where will it go? Does it return to a recycling facility, for onward shipment to a reprocessing facility, where the cycle will begin once again? The process must be simple to manage and implement.
How are Materials Collected for Recycling?
Legislation now dictates that all waste material needs to be processed to divert the volume of recyclables and unnecessary waste going direct to landfill. Since 1996, the UK government has enforced a landfill tax on all waste disposed of within landfill. The rate of tax has increased considerably in recent years rising from the original level of £8 per ton, to the current rate of £40 per ton. The UK government has recently announced that this will increase further to £48 per ton by the end of 2010/11. This charge applies to all general waste materials streams, although there exists a reduced rate for inert materials. Sending waste material straight to landfill is an expensive choice and choosing acceptable solutions to divert waste out of landfill is now important.
Therefore, the message to everyone is obvious, sort your waste to scale back the volume of waste going to landfill. In the past, both at home and in the office, as soon as you place waste materials into the container , it is forgotten about. Someone else will collect it and take it away. Today, in the home and at work, recycling is being encouraged with the supply of containers in which to place certain recyclable materials.
Perhaps the most common products to be seen being recovered for recycling are paper, card, glass, metals and plastics. Even so the opportunity to recycle many materials or products keeps growing. Although technically not seen as recycling, food waste and garden waste collections are increasing, where the food or garden waste is taken back to a plant for processing into a reusable or saleable compost product.
Businesses like ours are fast supplying energy recovering facilities to sustain the ongoing challenge of what to do with all the waste products we, as a country, generate.
The means of collecting materials or waste material to be recycled is also growing and ever more noticeable within local communities. Dedicated collection sites, often referred to as bring bank sites, are popping up in superstore car parks to inspire customers of the supermarket to return such objects as bottles, newspapers or cardboard to the bins on their way into the store. Shoppers are therefore encouraged to return with their recyclables.
Local Authority waste collection crews or their appointed contractors will collect refuse and recyclables from the roadside commonly in front of your property. Collection from household premises generally continues to be the duty of the local council and several have employed the provision of boxes in which to collect specified recyclable materials or products.
In the industrial and commercial market, waste material management businesses offer different storage units in which the customer deposits the appropriate waste stream or recyclable material ready for collection. The particular bins will often be plainly branded as to which recyclable product should be put within that container or bin. Otherwise, the bins will probably be colour coded to identify which recyclable products need to be placed within which bins.
The key to a successful recycling initiative is residents about what can be recycled and how. In the commercial world getting the co-operation of office employees is crucial. The introduction of any recycling scheme must ensure that in asking employees to separate waste for recycling, it does not become time consuming and affect the effectiveness of what employees should be doing in their work.
The Recycling Process
Several collection solutions exist for the collection of the recyclable material . No matter which collection system is employed , the materials are taken to a drop off point where they will be segregated from other waste materials.
To start the recycling process from a collection viewpoint, the more recyclable material that can be segregated at origin, i.e. at home or in the work place, the more effective it will be for the waste collector. That’s the reason individual storage units are provided to the waste producer to encourage separation at source. If card could be collected on a vehicle, that will collect no other waste materials, the card is going to be kept clean and for that reason could have an improved value when it actually reaches the processing plant. Similarly, dedicated glass collection vehicles are used to collect solely glass. Aside from the obvious health and safety reasons and the weight of collected glass, it will have a much higher value if the collected glass load is not mixed with other waste material. Uncontaminated recyclables will present a better value than contaminated materials.
When collected, the recyclable resources are generally taken direct to the reprocessing plant, if the load contains only that specific type of material. So a dedicated glass collection vehicle could take the load straight to a glass processing plant.
If blended recyclables are being collected such as paper and card within the same compartment, it might be necessary for the collector to take the load to a materials recycling facility to unload and permit the load to be sorted into separate paper and card bundles for onward transfer to a paper or card processing plant. No matter what technique is employed, the recyclable material obtained will most likely be segregated or washed before going through to a reprocessing facility to be converted to a new resource and eventually used as a new product or in manufacturing.
One of the biggest waste disposal organisations has actually changed its focus totally. Instead of just being a waste collection company, in these changing years Biffa has refocused into being a provider of energy from waste, as is mirrored in their new strap line power behind waste.
The Increasing Significance of Recycling
In the UK close to 35% of waste material collected from homes is recycled or composted. Although within the business and industrial market, the amount of waste material sent to landfill has dropped considerably recently and the volume of waste materials now being diverted for recycling or reuse by this market has risen over the volumes going to landfill. But there is still much to be done to increase rates further in this sector.
Landfill continues to play a significant role in the management of waste across the UK as not all waste items are able to be recycled plus some are more suited to landfill disposal than by any other method. Nonetheless, it’s not only the increasing costs of getting rid of waste directly in landfill that is making recycling a far more appealing option for companies. Landfill is now scarce, with certain authorities hinting that the quantity of space in existence across all UK landfill sites, has less than ten years existence left before all sites are reckoned to be filled.
In recent times, waste materials management companies have had to change their focal point, and start to think about and invest in new technologies, like energy from waste facilities, anaerobic digestion facilities and mechanical biological treatment plants, as alternatives to landfill. Local Authorities have changed their attitudes by commencing comprehensive strategic reviews as to how waste under their jurisdiction must be handled. In some instances this has meant that unitary authorities are progressing plans to bring in extended contracts, usually around two-and-a-half decades long, through which to manage their waste management requirements. These agreements will most likely include the need to create a facility through which to take care of all waste material created across the region by segregating all waste streams. The agreements may also include the collection of waste and recyclables from households across the region. So the face of waste management is evolving quickly. The times of just throwing everything in the dustbin have vanished and the advent of new technologies are upon us. The introduction of new technologies will play a huge role in the future of waste management.
Conclusion
Recycling is now a lifestyle and is not going anywhere soon. It has evolved through the years from a thing that was carried out with no real thought behind it. The trusty rag and bone man was just working to make a living. Today, many blue chip firms are setting out plans for a ‘zero to landfill’ waste policy, where the purpose is very clear – reduce waste, reuse waste and recycle waste, but no waste must finish up in landfill. Some companies have announced ambitious target dates by which to attain such plans.
Many homes across the country now have some type of bin in which to separate waste for recycling. The decision to split up newspapers, aluminium cans and plastic bottles are almost common place. Whilst in industrial and business sectors, there is an increasing list of items to consider for recycling such as printer cartridges, office paper, metal and electrical equipment. Even on street corners and airports you see bins to recycle such items as newspapers and drink cans.
Ideally the entire process would be a complete cycle such as it was in the days of the horse. However the advent of new technology will increase further the way in which our waste is to be managed in the future, but it is highly improbable that we will ever reach the ultimate waste free society. There will always be a need for waste to be disposed of somewhere, somehow.
